2006-09-27, Bridge of Glass : The sky was clear and the sun was getting low in the sky, so I drove out to Tacoma to visit the Bridge of Glass and hang out and take pictures in Chihuly's glassblowing shop. Sadly the shop was closed but I did enjoy Tacoma and then attempted to find a good spot to see the sunset on Rainier. I missed most of it trying to find a good unblocked location. I did find it finally just a little past sunset. The view between the trees was gorgeous also, just couldn't see the whole mountain.

2006-10-08, Applejuice : April & Deb were making applejuice when I visited to help with a computer issue (we barter tiny-house landscaping for computer repairs). Techinque: Peel and core the apples, then put them in the steamer to steam out the juice. Juice goes into super clean jars with boiled lids.

Art Institute Chicago (Oct 2008) : It was a great afternoon at the AIChicago museum -one thing, they allow non-flash photography so I was extremely happy. I'm studying how painters make folds in fabric and the suggestion of thick brocade with just a few brush strokes or patches of color - so there are a lot of detailed pictures about that here. I did take photos of most of the artist information next to the paintings so if there is something you are particularly interested in leave a note and I can dig up the card.

Urban Craft Uprising & Seattle Stroll : Rachel suggested the Urban Craft Uprising ( http://www.urbancraftuprising.com/ ) as something I might like. It was really just what I was looking for - over a hundred tables of beautiful hand crafted gifts - no mall or factory stuff anywhere. We had a good time hunting art through the crowded aisles - we both had covered our lists in very little time Rachel bought a hat, and I got a little natural felted wool art square for the house. Most booths also had the artisans that made the things that were on sale - I always like talking to them to hear about the inspirations and insights of their particular craft. I am defintiely going to attend this every year - what a great find.

After the show I got some Thai food, walked down to the water hoping for a good sunset, along the waterfront to Pikes Place Market, then back up the hill to my car. A chill winter day filled with friendship, art, music, and food - hard to top that.

2009-02-28, Grape Day Park, Escondido, CA : We were just looking for a park to take a walk in - and stumbled across this magical place. First the giant grape vine and grapes were so natural and organic. We saw buildings in the back and started to walk toward them ...I sniffed the air and said "I smell blacksmiths" - charcoal and heated metal. Heading for the Blacksmiths we came across a working wheelwright shop. The guide there gave us a complete tour - demonstrating all the equipment and how a wheel was assembled. Modern equipment and specialized tools combined with ancient know-how and craftsmanship. After the Wheelwright we just moved right onto the working blacksmith shop - old shaft and belt driven tools and several forges and anvils were demonstrated. Then over to the rail station - beautifully re-created ticket office and loading platform, then inside the train car with a car-length diorama of Escondido in the early 1900s - back of the train held the postal sorting station. Finally we got a private tour of a 7 gabel house - wonderfully laid out and filled with historical artifacts. Special thanks to the friendly guides!
